Judith began playing the mountain dulcimer after her retirement as a college professor of special education. Her music evidences tremendous dedication and determination to master the instrument. She has a great ear for music, and a keen intuition for repertoire adaptable for rendering on dulcimer. Her playing and arranging refute any notion that there are narrow boundaries for repertoire on dulcimer. In addition, Judith has tackled challenging 18th century pieces originally played on harp--such as "Sir Festus Burke" by the iconic Irish harper, Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738). That tune is a track on her CD, mentioned below.
In 2013, Judith released her first CD of solo dulcimer music. It is called “Sunshine and Shadows," and features gentle finger-style tunes that are relaxing and soothing. The album expands
the usual repertoire for the instrument, and includes well-known, beloved popular standards and show tunes in addition to traditional Celtic and original songs.
The recording has received very positive reviews from accomplished dulcimer players and other listeners. Bill Collins has written that Judith's “graceful musicianship brings a refreshing approach to familiar tunes.” In Nina Zanetti's words, “Judith has mastered the art of making the mountain dulcimer sing. If you like the ‘softer side of dulcimer,’ this is a CD that you don’t want to miss.”
Judith's CD is available (while supplies last) through this website, where you can sample tracks:
Judith has taught at nationally-recognized dulcimer gatherings, and her reputation as performer and dulcimer instructor has continued to grow.
In addition, Judith has made available on this site a dulcimer transcription ((c) Judith Giddings) of the great tune for Celtic harp, called "Give Me Your Hand".
